How Much GPU VRAM Do You Actually Need in 2026?
8GB, 12GB, 16GB - VRAM numbers are everywhere in GPU marketing. Here is what actually matters for 1080p and 1440p gaming in 2026, and where 8GB still holds up.
Every graphics card listing now leads with a VRAM figure, and it is easy to assume bigger is automatically better. The real answer depends on the resolution and settings you actually play at, not just the number printed on the box.
VRAM stores the textures, frame buffers, and other assets a game needs close to the GPU core for fast access. Higher resolutions and higher quality texture settings increase how much of that memory gets used, which is why 4K gaming with maximum texture packs pushes VRAM usage noticeably higher than 1080p or 1440p at sensible settings.
At 1080p, and at 1440p with quality settings chosen sensibly, 8GB of VRAM remains a genuinely capable amount for the large majority of current titles, particularly when upscaling technology such as DLSS 4 is available to ease the load on the GPU without a meaningful visual downgrade.
Where 8GB starts to show its limits is at 4K resolution, with texture settings maxed out, or in a handful of recent releases that are unusually memory hungry regardless of resolution. That is a smaller slice of the market than marketing materials sometimes suggest, and it sits well outside what a sub £1000 gaming PC is realistically built for.
Cards with significantly more VRAM tend to carry a real price premium, and that money is often better spent on a stronger GPU core, more system memory, or faster storage if your target resolution is 1080p or 1440p rather than 4K.
